Depression: 3 Surprising Drug-Free Ways To Fight Depression

According to recent reports here are 3 surprising drug-free ways to fight depression.

Get More Sunshine

Sunlight has an exhilarating effect and combats depression and lethargy. It also stimulates the brains pineal gland to produce melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep cycles and emotional moods.

Thirty minutes each day is often enough to improve your mood and energy level.

Get Active

Exercising first thing in the morning helps tremendously. It energizes the body as well as help to banish depression.

Physical activities such as walking, running, biking and swimming all reduce stress hormones and increase the level of endorphins in your body. Endorphins are the mood boosting, pain killing compounds in the brain that are responsible for the "feel good" factor.

Exercising as little as 20 minutes several times a week will often be sufficient.

Try a Cold Shower

Cold water activates sensory nerves that lead to the brain. A cold exhilarating shower can be emotionally uplifting. Cold also causes the body to release endorphins with their proven pain fighting and mood enhancing properties.

Start out slowly! Begin with your usual warm shower. When you're finished turn off the hot water. Leave the cold water running. Start by wetting your feet first. Next, expose the hands and face. Finally, step under the shower. Let the cold water run over your head, face, the front of your body and then down your back.

You can begin by taking a cold shower that lasts only a few seconds. After one month, the entire process should last no more than 40 seconds. Work up to whatever is comfortable for you.

Caution: If you can't tolerate the cold expose only your feet, hands and face. Gradually increase the duration and area of exposure. Do not try cold water therapy if you suffer from acute illness or high blood pressure.  You should feel warm and invigorated after the shower. If you don't, forgo cold showers.
